Trent Cotchin - Captain
Trent Cotchin, the captain of Richmond Tigers is one of the leading midfielders in the AFL. On 23 November 2012, Cotchin was appointed captain for the 2013 season. He has lead the side for three consecutive years now and has grown into an exceptional captain who leads by example both on and off field. Cotchin was draft pick No. 2 for Richmond in the 2007 AFL Draft and was recruited from the Northern Knights Under 18’s Football Club. In 2013 Cotchin helped lead the Tigers to their first finals appearance in 12 years and also picked up the tigers from a 3 wins to 10 losses in 2014 to lead them to the finals.
Playing 21 games this season, Cotchin has made a huge impact on his team’s performance with a total of 310 kicks, 221 handballs, 531 disposals, 70 marks, 71 tackles and 12 goals. His consistent performances each game enables him to lead by example and inspire his fellow teammates. Cotchin is a courageous player who brings consistent form to every match. His great skill and agility allows him to average 25.3 disposals a game. He works hard with his team, continually looking for improvement in every aspect of the game. As the captain he has educated himself about his teammates and developed strong relationships with each of them. He brings positive attitude and momentum to his side which highly reflects on his teammates.
Trent Cotchin has won the Jack Dyer Medal three times in four years, (2011, 2012 and 2014) becoming the equal second youngest player in AFL history to have won 3 Best and Fairest awards and the youngest Tiger to do so. In 2012 he was also equal runner up for the Brownlow Medal and in 2013 he received a significant 19 votes. Other honours include All Australian award in 2012 and NAB AFL Rising Star Nominee in 2008 while being the AFLCA Champion Player of the year in 2012.
