Hardwick started his coaching career in 2005 as assistant coach at Hawthorn. Playing 207 games in his career, Hardwick is very experienced and has great knowledge of the game. As a tough and solid defender himself his passion for football is reflected in his coaching style. He was appointed coach of Richmond in 2010 and since then has shown great commitment and determination to his team’s performance. As a coach Damien is looking to continually improve his team’s performance each week. As coach his role is to develop the team’s strategy, skills and strengths. He has to set clear goals and expectations for the individuals and the team as a whole. He also has to effectively communicate with his players and motivate them to perform their best. He also has to be well organised as he takes on the role of also managing the coaches under him.
As a coach Hardwick is motivated for success. With a bit of an uncompromising nature he is able to give his team clear and brief instructions and criticism when needed. He also readily gives praise to his players when they perform. As coach he shows superior leadership skills and expertise in order for his team to develop and perform. As the Richmond Tigers enter the finals, hopefully Hardwick can guide the team to achieve victory.
